About Hamish

I am an industrial designer with expertise in designing and building complex systems from direct-to-consumer (DTC) meal kits to consumer electronics.

With over 15 years of experience building and leading diverse and cross-functional creative teams. I spent the last decade as the VP of the Packaging Design practice at Ammunition a leading San Francisco based design firm.

I founded their Brooklyn studio and I was responsible for generating a minimum of $1MM in revenue annually.

Over my 20 year career, I have opened multiple successful satellite studios and added structural packaging design as a service to both Ammunition and packaging development company Burgopak.

At Ammunition, structural packaging design increased revenue by 30%.

The packaging design practice I founded at Burgopak was sold to Jansy in 2012 and would later become part of one of the largest packaging industry players, Berlin packaging.

Working directly with members of the c-suite and founders, I help large corporations and early stage startups identify what is worth pursuing and how to realize it. The results of this work is always impactful.

The packaging system I designed for Roc Nation and Caliva's cannabis startup Monogram, enabled them to sell the company for $100MM before they had sold any product.

I am the inventor on 15 packaging patents including 10 for Apple inc.

New York (2015-2024)

I have always been drawn to New York. The liveliness, diversity and creative culture is second to none. It is where I met my wife, and where my children were born.

In 2014 I decided to return from San Francisco. I gave my notice, was planning my exit from Ammunition, and the move back east.

You know what they say about the best laid plans? Ammunition's owners, Robert and Matt had a different idea for me.

Delightful Touchpoints

SF (2012-2015)

I joined San Francisco based industrial design firm Ammunition as the founding member of their packaging design practice. The initial focus was Beats by Dre.

Transitioning existing products to a new Beats-owned-supply-chain and incorporating the new product releases.

The original packaging was not designed systematically so a new system needed to be developed to maintain the look and feel but unify the products.

The initial system encompassed 11 products across 3 families totaling 136 SKUs.

Chicago (2010-2012)

I returned to Chicago and took on the role of Creative Director in the newly formed packaging design business BurgoUSA.

I built the creative team and led projects for household names such as Gillette, AB InBev, Nike, Motorola, Blackberry, LG and L’Oréal.

My work for Gillette and BeGreen won a 2011 DuPont Diamond award for Excellence in Innovation, Cost/Waste Reduction, and Sustainability.

New York (2008-2010)

I worked remotely for Burgopak, focusing on developing new patents, a cosmetics line and developing child-proof pharmacuetical sliders.

One of the new products I developed while in NYC was a shopping bag shaped giftcard slider. It felt like the perfect fit for Bloomingdales with their iconic brown bags.

London & Chicago (2004-2008)

As a graduate, I joined Burgopak, and soon became an integral member of their London based design team.

The patented mobile phone slider boxes I developed were picked up by Motorola.

One thing led to another, and at the age of 24 I found myself on a plane to Chicago. There I set up a satellite office that would later become the US headquarters for Burgopak.

I have always had a keen interest in food and drink, I love to cook and started brewing beer while I lived in Chicago.

Freetime Beer Co. was born, a collaboration between myself and Rich we have been friends for over 30 years.

We faced numerous ordeals over the years such as being forced to rebrand in 2018 and the struggles of owning a business built on socializing during a global pandemic.

Thoughout this journey we have remained great friends, learnt how be resilient and agile, and have plenty of highlights to celebrate.

Education

Brunel (2000-2004). The industrial design program at Brunel has a technical focus. The majority of projects require working prototypes and the level of technicality required for each project is high; requiring electronics, mechanisms and moving parts.

This was a great fit for my curiosity of how things work and my natural ability to learn and master complex systems.

Interests

I grew up in a small village in the West Wales, it was a rural upbringing with a lot of time spent outdoors.

You would find me and my brothers jumping off cliffs, fishing, sailing, surfing and exploring the coastline.
