Ollie Packaging System

A DTC dog food company that ships nutritious slow cooked food in perfectly portioned packages directly to your door.

When Ollie engaged us they were already producing and shipping their dog food, but they were having some major issues that they hoped could be fixed with new packaging. The major issue they were facing was the durability of the individual packages inside the mailing box.

Ollie was making their food at a contract manufacturer and they used their default packaging method which was a horizontally filled PP tray that was then sealed. To stockpile and ship enough food that the end customer could also effectively store in their home, the trays were frozen after filling. The frozen PP reached its glass point and it was common for trays to crack inside the shipping carton. This created CX issues and cost Ollie in refunds and shipping additional food.

Our suggestion was to switch flexible film and use form fill and seal machinery to package the food portions. This eliminated the glass point issue and solved the portion package durability issue.

Now that we had a more durable portion system we got to work on optimizing the system to feed the largest variety of caloric requirements with the fewest number of packaging SKUs (portion packages and shipping packages).

The final system is a delight to unbox and use, from the perfect portions to the thoughtfully designed storage container and serving scoop. I still feed my dog Pico with Ollie to this day.
