Gillette Plastic Reduction
The Gillette packaging team at P&G in Boston was looking to reduce the amount of plastic in their razor packaging.
The final package was a molded fiber tray that was impregnated with blister varnish so that a clear film front panel could be attached to it.
There is a hole diecut into the sidewall at the opposite end of the tray to the hangtab. This allows a foot to protrude from the base of the tray so that the package can be hung from a peg or stand on a shelf.
Gillette and molded fiber company BeGreen won a 2011 DuPont Diamond award winner for Excellence in Innovation, Cost/Waste Reduction, and Sustainability. The molded fiber based clamshell replacement removed a considerable amount of plastic from P&G’s packaging footprint.
